Trust-based request evidence guide
Romance & trust-based payment scams
A financial request from someone you met online can feel personal and time-sensitive. Give yourself room to compare the story, profile, photos, and payment details with independent evidence.
Evidence Over Accusation. These are observable signals to verify, not labels for a person or a guarantee about a transaction.

Signals you can check yourself
Several connected signals may justify a closer look. A single signal rarely tells the whole story.
The relationship moves quickly toward a financial ask
Fast declarations of trust followed by a request for money, gift cards, crypto, or a direct transfer can be a High Risk pattern, particularly when you have not met or verified identity.
An emergency creates a deadline
Medical, travel, legal, or family emergencies may be real, but urgency is not verification. Ask for time and seek details through an independent channel before sending money.
Profile photos appear under different names
Reverse-image search profile photos. The same image connected to unrelated names or profiles is observable evidence that deserves closer review.
Payment details appear in public reports
Search the phone number, username, payment handle, and distinctive phrases. These findings are context for your decision, not a categorical accusation.
The transfer cannot be easily reversed
Pressure toward gift cards, crypto, wire transfers, or direct payment apps can increase the risk level when paired with an unverified identity or urgent story.
Verify before you send
Make room for a better decision.
- 01
Pause the payment decision
A legitimate request can usually withstand time for an independent check; do not let a claimed emergency eliminate that step.
- 02
Verify beyond the profile
Use a live video conversation, reverse-image search, and contact information you find independently to compare the story.
- 03
Share the evidence with someone you trust
A second person can help spot timing, payment, or story inconsistencies that are easier to miss under emotional pressure.
